What is California Proposition 65?
California Proposition 65 is part of the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986. It requires businesses to provide warnings if products may expose you to certain chemicals, including heavy metals, even at very low levels, as set by the state of California.
Whole foods like fresh fruits, vegetables, and unprocessed grains are not required to carry Prop 65 warnings, even though they naturally exceed the Prop 65 level recommendations. When those same foods are processed, concentrated, powdered, dried, or blended into packaged food products, they are regulated under Prop 65 requirements, which is why some packaged foods may carry a warning despite being made from real food ingredients.
